This weekend Megan and I attended the symphony that had a Halloween theme. Tonight, Megan makes the report:
Chills, thrills . . . violins? Terror, horror . . . cellos? Shrieking, screaming . . . flutes?
They all don't exactly add up do they? So when my Dad and I got tickets to the symphony's latest concert titled Classical Frights you just don't know what to expect.
We got to the Globe News Center a little late after weaving our way in and out of traffic coming downtown. We rushed into the doors and after I grabbed a cough drop, we entered the stage area. After lots of tuning the orchestra was ready to play.
The conductor crept on. Ooooookay. The first surprise of the night looked us in the face. The conductor had apparently "dressed up" for the occasion. He wore all black, and a red cape flowed behind him. His face was snowy white with fangs. Our conductor was not a conductor. He was a vampire!
After the first bone-chilling song, the conductor exited to change. A beautiful woman entered the stage in a purple silk dress. Her hair gleamed in the spotlight pure black. The conductor quickly followed the girl and soon another song was played. The girl played furiously along, her fingers flying up and down the board. Soon two songs were played and intermission was sprung upon us.
We hurried into the lobby. I pushed aside the door that lead to the balcony. After breathing in fresh air and listening to silence, we slowly walked into the lobby again. After getting a Coke, we rushed into the stage area and the second part began.
My Dad and I listened to a goosebump-making song, and this time the conductor was dressed up in a purple robe covered with moons and stars and a floppy hat with the same decorations. The conductor exited and came back out in a Hogwart's robe and round glasses. He was studying a blue book and he peered into the audience intently.
"I learned a new spell," he announced. "But it's all in Chinese!"
After the laughter died, he continued. "Oh, here's the translation," he said turning the page. "Sauce chicken . . . oh, nevermind!"
He motioned to the orchestra and they started playing the music from Harry Potter. And at the last song, all the symphony members put on masks and the last song was played by monsters, princesses, batmen, and even a Shrek.. Tremendous applause filled the area, and we slowly headed outside.
Our night at the symphony was over.
Great writing partner--I felt like I was there with you! Sounds like a great Daddy-Daughter date night.
